"Didn’t listen to me and my symptoms"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Gynaecology (Ward 49)

(as the patient),

Early one morning I started bleeding very large amounts - outwith my period. This was going through to my trousers and jacket as I sat on the bus up to a&e. The waiting time was very little which was very appreciated. An auxiliary nurse - unfortunately I can’t remember their name - was fantastic and gave me facilities to change out of my soiled clothes and gave me a gown, pad and pants.

A junior doctor came and took history from me, my mum is a gynaecology nurse and she felt it was an “ectropian bleed” which is explained to the doctor. They did not physically examine me or see how I was bleeding.

After about an hour, they came back and said I could be discharged, I explained how I wasn’t happy because I felt I hadn’t had a full examination- they said they weren’t trained to do a female examination, which I understand but felt that gynaecology should see me. They agreed to re-contact gynaecology.

When a registrar came to review me their first words were “I hear you want to be examined”, I do not think this gave me any dignity as a patient especially considering I was still bleeding quite considerably. They left the room so I could get myself into the appropriate position for a female examination - I was bleeding on the floor. When they examined me it was extremely painful - I hadn’t any pain on admission which they then questioned. They commented on how I was passing very large clots but stated they couldn’t see anything and I was discharged home with worsening advice.

I felt the registrar didn’t listen to me and my symptoms.

I then had an appointment at the sandyford to have another examination as I continued to spot, the doctors there found an area of ectropian cells - this required invasive treatment.

When I was at my appointment they seen the discharge letter where it states that I felt I was having an ectopic pregnancy and miscarrying. I never thought I was pregnant, and really do not think it’s fair that this is in my medical notes - especially when it’s clearly apparent that the doctors in a&e did not listen to me and my informed concerns, and that my concern initially was the right diagnosis.
