I had been living with spinal stenosis for several years and it got to the stage where I could no longer walk or stand for any length of time. I had tried physiotherapy to little effect and the epidural to great but only time-limited success so I knew surgery was the only option and one which I dreaded. So it was especially important to me that I would be reassured.
Thus it is a shame that the name of the surgeon who I saw and dealt with and who performed the spinal decompression I underwent would be redacted because the fact is I've never come across a health professional in whom I felt so much confidence. The nature of the procedure was explained to me in detail, I was signposted to information so I could understand the process of the operation, including the risks. I was talked through the whole procedure--seeing the scans and x-rays so I was made aware of exactly what I was signing up for. I felt I was in control of my decision every step of the way.
The only thing that was undecided was whether I would have one or two sections of my spine decompressed and has it happened it was the two which was decided on the day and for which I am grateful because it will save me undergoing a second operation in the near future.
I have only praise for the surgeon, his team and the nursing staff. I was fortunate to be discharged the following day. And although this was my first operation and overnight stay in a hospital I do have experience with the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital as my mother was treated there several times and had the same high quality treatment.
I have no hesitation in recommending the level of service and care at this hospital.
