"Consultation with nurse practitioner"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as a parent/guardian),

During a consultation with nurse practitioner with my 8 yr old daughter she suffers frequent recurrent bouts of tonsillitis. A week post antibiotics she required to be seen again. today I expressed to the nurse how low my child was feeling as yet again she has had to miss school due to being unwell. I told the nurse that she had actually said she hated her life because she is constantly off school misses dancing class and social time with her friends. nurse asks my daughter if she has siblings she told her 2 brothers 2 sisters nurse asks older or younger. she said older. nurse then asks my daughter if they bully her. I replied that I would hope not, as her siblings are all adults. My daughter is a much loved and cared for little girl and her family could not love her more if they tried and I I have no idea of the relevance between constant tonsillitis and bullying. To say I am furious is an understatement we went to the go surgery for medical advice and treatment for a very long standing medical complaint my daughter is currently on the waiting list to have the tonsils removed on average she is at the surgery every 4 weeks and has had tonsillitis 12 times over a 14 month period .  I to say I am deeply upset is an understatement

Dear Upset mummy,

I’m really sorry that you had such a poor experience with the nurse practitioner at your surgery – no-one should leave the practice feeling worse than when they arrived and although I don’t think this would have been the nurse practitioners aim, it’s how you felt and that’s what’s important.

I’m glad you got in touch to share your story and can fully understand why you left feeling furious

I can see you went to the practice looking for help for your daughters known recurrent tonsillitis; you took the time to share concerns and feelings (your daughters and your own), which wouldn’t have been easy and something you would normally only do with a close friend or family member. If I was in your shoes, I too would have been deeply upset by the response received - betrayed even.

I don’t know which practice you visited, but I think it would be good to forward your story on to them for reflection (I can do this for you if you'd like). I think it’s really important for us to say when we've been upset by something someone has said as it helps others to say so too and can lead to change. Would you be happy to send me more information? You can do this by emailing me on kirsten.dickson@nhs.net or by telephone on 01224 558404.

Take care,

Kirsten
