"The extra effort was very much appreciated"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I was a patient in the Labour Ward and Ward 17 in January.  I had an induced labour, with an epidural, episiotomy and forceps-assisted delivery, followed by the complication of delayed uterine involution, delayed third stage labour and significant post-partum haemorrhage.

During my time in hospital i was given excellent care and it would not be an exaggeration to say that I owe the lives of myself and my baby to the medical staff involved.

I was cared for by Dr. Magowan (who is a truly outstanding clinician), doctors Cheryl (who drew the short straw dealing with my labour!) and James, a multitude of midwives (but i would especially like to mention Fiona,  Claire and Morag) and several care assistants (in particular Audrey).

I was treated with respect, dignity and, most importantly, compassion, by everyone that i came into contact with.  The professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff, even at the end of a long shift, was admirable.

The facilities, cleanliness and catering were all very good, but it was the quality and attitude of the staff which left a lasting impression on my husband and me.  I realise that these people are paid to do this work, but they went the extra mile and displayed real pride in their work.  I would like them to know that the extra effort was very much appreciated, and they should not forget how important the care that they provide is, from making difficult clinical decisions to providing the magic toast!

I was very vulnerable, scared and in pain for some of my stay, and the kindness and skill of the staff assured me that I was in safe hands.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of your time in hospital. We appreciate feedback and I will most certainly share this feedback with those involved in your care. Staff strive to care for women and their families to the best of their ability whilst appreciating that the birth of a baby is a very special time.

kind regards

Shona
