"An utter nightmare, which should never..."

About: University Hospital Of North Durham

What I liked

The staff at the hospital were excellent, I was an unexpected admission to Ward 3 and was treated well. There was some waiting, but this was an acute ward, and they had several emergencies. Care by all staff was very good.

I visited x ray who were quick and efficient, porters were great, as were the cleaning staff, very competent, and nice to patients.

Food was timely and excellent, some older patients could have done with a little help with food, and feeder cups for the very infirm.

What could be improved

I was transferred to stay the night on Ward 5, a mixed ward. Women and men are in seperate rooms of four beds, however, there was no door on ours, just a large opening.

Staff were busy, there were no evening drinks, and I had a long wait for the last of my treatment, waiting till, after 12 at night, when the previous had finished at 8.30 pm, and should have followed on.

If they had said there would be a long delay, I could have relaxed, but they did not.

The worst part of this stay, was a man with, I suspect dementia, waking me after an hour, trying to urinate on my belongings in the wardrobe next to me,showing me his penis. I had to get up and lead him out. One hour later an elderly patient in her eighties screamed and awoke me, as the same man had urinated on the chair next to me, and had taken his trousers off and sat down next to me.

Another hour later and he was back next to my bed, I sensed him there, woke, grabbed him, and lead him out of the ward.

Apparently he had behaved like this previously. I felt totally unsafe, decided to wait for the results of my tests the next day, and leave regardless, of anything else. It was a complete nightmare, and I will never stay again, I would rather drop down dead in the street.

Anything else?

The staff were very good and efficient, however the stay was an utter nightmare, as I was totally unsafe, and I blame bad management for this.
