"Traumatic Cataract operation"

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital / Ophthalmology

I had a cataract operation last week following a pre-op appointment the week before. Following booking in I sat with many others some of who it seemed were having their pre-ops done then. Despite my having had my pre-op done the week previously I had to sit for 4 hours while these other patients were seen.

Another issue was that a doctor came to the waiting room where we were all individually asked which lens we wanted fitting. Surely this should have been discussed at the pre-op instead of having to make a rushed decision then. People sitting either side of me agreed that we were worried whether we had made the right decision in such a rush.

When I did get taken to theatre the staff were lovely but I was shocked to find that I did not have the surgeon I was booked with. The surgeon hit my iris which was extremely painful and I am still having awful pain and discomfort. I was given a clear eye protector which was very uncomfortable as my eye was so light sensitive.

After my operation I was put in a chair back in the waiting room whilst all the previous patients had been taken into a cubicle to lay down for a recovery time, but the cubicles were now being used by nurses for paperwork.

I do not understand why they have so many people waiting for up to 4 hours in each session. As they know how long the procedure takes surely blocks of 2 hours would be better.

All in all I would ask to be referred to another hospital when my other eye requires surgery.
