"I felt like I was wasting their time"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine

(as a service user),

I wish to express how I felt during my most recent experience in A& E. Your A& E receptionists, they are the first people you come in to contact with. I was in a mental health crisis and, I felt their manner with me was just that I was, “wasting their time”. They cannot judge what comes through the door, I deserve help as much as anybody else. Just because I happen to need A& E care on a regular basis, does not give them the right to be judgmental with me.

Dear AberdeenAngel

I am sorry to read that whilst attending A&E you were made to feel as if you were wasting staffs time. The A&E staff pride themselves in dealing with all kinds of health issues including patients who are suffering from mental health issues.

I will of course discuss your concerns with the team and apologise again for your recent experience when attending A&E.

With best wishes

Fiona Robertson

Chief nurse
