From the diagnosis of the tumour in my left kidney on 28th December 2017 to the operation on 24th Jan 2018, the care that I have received has been incredible! I had a very large tumour (13cm) so I had a radical open nephrectomy on the morning of 24th Jan. The anaesthetist and the surgeon came to see me beforehand and made me feel very relaxed about the operation. It took about 3 hours and I woke up feeling fine with no pain. I had an epidural before the general anaesthetic to avoid lots of pain when I woke up. It was amazing, there were no complications during surgery and I was drinking and eating the same day.
I got up on 26th Jan and walked about (very slowly and gingerly) in the ward and was then discharged on 27th Jan. It is now a couple of weeks since the operation and I have just walked a mile and feel pretty good. I just have a slightly dull ache at times but the scar is healing well (26cm long) and shows the surgeon's skill!
I think this review page is a great idea as reading other people's praise for this department made me feel so much better whilst waiting for my operation. I can't thank the staff on Clarke ward more, they were lovely and I 'enjoyed' my stay. The food was good the staff polite and efficient and my anaesthetist and surgeon are fabulous :-)
Thank-you!
