My Grandad was admitted to the QMC due to a fall and he was transferred to F20. He had heart failure and had not properly eaten or been mobile for a few weeks. However, all the staff worked with him to encourage him to eat and become more mobile. Sadly, this didn’t work but the care that he received was fantastic.
Since December he had deteriorated very quickly, he was vulnerable and scared. However, for the first time in weeks my Grandad appeared a little more content and secure. He no longer needed the comforters he had prior to his admission and I feel this was a reflection of the care he received on F20.
Sadly, my Grandad passed away a few days go on F20. As requested, the nurses rang me as soon as they became concerned. Heartbreakingly we didn’t make it to the ward before he passed, so thank you to the nurse who was with my Grandad at the end. Also a big thank you to all of those who cared for him during his stay.
On a more negative note, my Grandad spent a few days on D57 before being moved to F20. The care he received there was just awful and this was reflected in his behaviour. There was little regard for his dignity or feelings. Some of the staff on that ward should be ashamed of themselves for the way they spoke to my Grandad and for the way they spoke about him to his family.
On the whole though, my Grandad received some very good care at the end of his life and I’ll be forever thankful he didn’t pass away alone and scared.
"The care that he received was fantastic."
