"Amazing care"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Maternity care

My son was born at QMC Labour Suit in November 2017. I got several complications one by one during pregnancy: fibroids, gestational diabetes, and finally pre-eclampsia. Actually it wasn't as bad as it sounds, I got lucky and all of those had no consequences for me. Nevertheless, as a result I met with several doctors, a dietitian, a diabetes midwife, a nursing consultant and of course multiple (about 20) midwives in maternity clinics, antenatal care, induction ward, labour ward and postnatal ward. So I've got a pretty good idea of how things are at QMC. And I can recommend the place 100%. All the staff is very knowledgeable (take time to explain everything in detail), welcoming (do not forget smiles and kind words), and respectful. I was not an easy patient, I had my own opinions about some things and refused to follow the doctors' advice in some cases. They were giving me good advice given the circumstances, but were respectful to my choice to follow my knowledge and intuition. For instance, due to pre-ecplampsia I was supposed to be induced at week 37, I waited till week 39. I got really great care during these 2 weeks, and the staff was very flexible in terms of meeting my needs. My induction, labour and 3 days post labour were also full of amazing care. I'm so grateful to everyone, but I need to say special thank you to the Supervisor of Midwives. She met with me to discuss my Birth Plan right before I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. Obviously, the plan we discussed was never used given the circumstances, but that didn't matter, as I got such emotional support from her that I felt very confident despite the diagnose. I really don't know how I would manage without her kind words, she made all the difference for me. I'll be always grateful to her for being so empathetic.

Many congratulations on the birth of your son.

I’m so glad to hear how things worked out for you, even with all of the complications you unfortunately experienced, and that we were able to help and support you and make you feel confident in our care.

I’ve shared your kind words with the QMC Maternity Team, who asked me to pass on their appreciation.

Gemma Herbert

Acting Matron, QMC Maternity
