"Care given to my father"

About: Community Clinical Nurse Specialist Team Hospice at Home

(as a service user),

Dad was diagnosed with incurable cancer in November 2016. In January 2017 we found out it had grown and chemotherapy was offered to help but not cure. The hospital sent dads details to the hospice and then Nicki came to the house to visit. She explained what the hospice done and wasn't pushy at all. She took the time to get to know dad and the family and got to know dad's wishes. We then found out the cancer had went to the brain and Nicki was straight on it making sure the medication was right. Dad was admitted to hospital but signed himself out, feeling guilty and thinking I had done the wrong thing bringing him home it was a relief to have Nicki tell me I done the right thing. Dad started to deteriorate and Nicki got everything put in place for him at home.

Then came the hospice at home team. They would help with personal care. If dad didn't need anything it wasn't a case of ok see you later it was a case of staying and chatting with us which was a welcome distraction.

Dad lost his fight in April 2017 but the support of the hospice is still there. I can't fault them in anyway.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your feedback about the care your family received throughout the last stages of your dad’s illness and his eventual death. We are very pleased to know that we made a difference and that you felt supported by two of our community services.

It is always a privilege to care for people at such a difficult time and it is particularly so, when we are able to care for people in their own home and share such a special space with patients and families.

We are very appreciative of your positive feedback but we would always want to know where we could improve upon what it is that we do – I notice from your story summary that you have selected a tag for ‘transport’. I wonder if you would like to contact me directly so that you could tell me a little bit more about the transport so we can explore if this is something we can improve?

My contact details are:

Lesley Whitelaw, Senior Nurse Patient Services, 01324 826222 or email lesley.whitelaw@nhs.net

Thank you once again for your very positive feedback and I will make sure that our community teams are aware of your post

Best wishes

Lesley
