"Severe sprained ankle, wrong treatment"

About: Cumberland Centre

I visited the MIU after falling on my ankle which I could not put any weight on. The pain was severe, with lots of swelling. I explained what happened including the “popping” noise and was basically dismissed by the nurses. I was told to weight bear despite the fact putting any weight on my ankle reduced me to tears, and it was so swollen I couldn’t put a shoe on it! 2 weeks later I went back as I still could not weight bear and the ankle was still very swollen. Again I was dismissed and told it can take a long time to heal. 6 months on and it still swells and causes pain. Turns out it was very severely sprained (complete tear/ruptured). My Physio has told me I should have had crutches as it was so bad and this has actually FURTHER damaged my ankle and I am now to be referred to a foot and ankle specialist as it is not healing. All in all I am very unhappy and disappointed with the way I was treated and wish I had gone to A&E where I may have been taken seriously and given the correct treatment. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go to MIU unless you have cut your finger.

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. However, I have to advise you that the MIU now falls under Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust . I would advise that you contact their PALS Team with your details and they will be able to look into your concerns. I do apologise about this but I have requested, on a number of occasions, that NHS Choices to up-dates their website. I will be forwarding your posting to my equivalent at PHNT (Derriford)
