The consultants are probably among the best in their field, but one senses they have seen too many dying patients. Thus, on off days, a feeling of hopelessness seemed to be projected to my dear wife who, according to my admittedly amateur experince, was not a hopeless patient. She felt this and I am sure this took the fight out of her. When admitted for, eventually, her last days, I was struck by the perfunctory “servicing” by some of the ward doctors. This surely has an impact on cancer patients? Maybe these doctors were tired - though being with my wife for some lengths of time, some of the “perfunctory” ones looked very fresh to me. Is there no time to rehearse doctors at The Christie in human relations? But on a positive note, my very great thanks inded to the nurses. They are surely the finest I have encountered in three continents? Care, sympathy, skill were attributes so obviously seen, that perhaps the hospital could get them to rehearse perfunctory staff in how to deal with both patients and their next of kin.
"Nursing is truly superb"
