"My Experience"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Gynaecology

I was admitted on 22nd jan with severe pain around ovaries. They didn't scan me until the 25th. Due to the findings (ovarian cysts) they told me i needed iv scan. I requested that this be done as an outpatient. The doctor assured me if i stayed as in patient my scan would be done in 1-2 days. Only for the same doctor to come to see me on 29th jan. After i had spent the whole weekend asking what was going on. To come and tell me i was to have the scan done as an outpatient and he denied ever telling me that i would get an iv scan.

I am home now and in extreme pain still and have no idea when i will get treatment or explanation. I am also worried about an elderly lady who was opposite me on the ward. I was feeding her every day because she had her food taken away from her for 2 days. Due to the fact she had dementia she was struggling to feed herself. The nurses assumed she just wasn't hungry i suppose. However when i started feeding her she ate every last bit. Disgusting. So i spent 7 days in a ward with little to no care or attention for absolutely nothing. I am now making visits every 2 days to my doctors surgery due to my pain and discomfort.

Thank you for providing feedback on your recent experience of Russells Hall Hospital.

We are very sorry that you were so unhappy about your care and treatment during your hospital stay and for the conflicting information you received about your scan. We also apologise for any lack of clarity regarding future treatment and the concern this is causing you.

It is difficult to comment on your specific case without your details and reviewing your medical notes. However, we would advise that you contact the Lead Nurse on B5 in confidence, if you prefer, contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on Freephone 0800 073 0510 or e-mail dgft.pals@nhs.net who would be happy to help resolve the issues you have raised.

Your comments about the elderly patient with dementia are extremely disturbing. All our nursing staff undergo dementia training and so there is no excuse for this lack of awareness.

Your comments have been brought to the attention of the Lead Nurse to learn from what our patients tell us and help us make improvements.
