"Lack of physio for my mum's broken arm"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Physiotherapy University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My Mum fractured her neck of humerus in December and we attended Wishaw General A&E. She received prompt treatment there and we cannot fault the staff, so thank you to them.

She was referred from there to the Fracture clinic where her care wasn't as good. Her first visit resulted in a 2 hour wait, made more irritating because the surgeon she was supposed to see sat and drank their coffee within our view having arrived at the clinic 90 minutes late, then announced to the nurse they were going and someone else would be down to do the clinic. Highly unprofessional!

However the replacement young surgeon was courteous and thorough. He impressed upon my Mum the importance of keeping her arm moving and advised her to start moving her elbow. He said she would start physio at her next visit to the clinic and it was really important she do this to preserve movement in her shoulder, however she should wait to see the physio before doing so.

2 weeks later at the Fracture clinic she was seen more timely and her surgeon again advised she must start moving her shoulder and start physio.

4 weeks later, despite warnings from 2 surgeons that she risks losing movement in her shoulder unless she moves it properly, she has still not received an appointment for physio. This is poor service.

Best care would be to have a physio at the fracture clinic - but to impress upon the patient the importance of physio, but then failing to provide it, is cruel in addition to bad care.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I have tried to call you- on a daily basis- on the number you provided but every time receive the automated message" no-one is available and there is no answer machine so please try later"

Is there another number I can reach you on?

My Mum has still heard nothing from your service.
