"Appalling treatment of 88 year old."

About: King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) / Cardiology

My 88 year old mother taken to Kings by ambulance after collapse. Admitted to Cotton ward, then Cardiac Care Unit, then Sam Oram ward, then Cotton ward again then Sam Oram again after another collapse and now,temporarily, R D Lawrence ward...where next? Who knows?

Total lack of communication re changes of ward, promised callbacks from doctors never received, incorrect information given by nursing staff. Huge variation in care between wards. Numerous moves have increased her low mood to the stage where she is not eating. Staff reaction to this varies from excellent &caring(Sam Oram) to appalling (Cotton).

So bad I took afternoon off from work & sat on ward for 4 hours on Monday to see a doctor &get information. After staging this "sit in" /cardiologist conversation felt. more informed. However after a fraught visit yesterday when water infection diagnosed(result mums extreme confusion) tonight we find she has endured yet another ward change! Not helping a frail elderly womans recovery!

I am sorry to read about your experience at King's with the care of your mother.

Whilst I am sure there were good clinical reasons for the ward moves, it is, nonetheless very stressful for both your mother and yourself.

I am concerned to read that you felt the care that your mother received on Cotton ward was 'appalling' and I know that the ward manager would like to have a bit more detail so that she can follow up on any issues.
