"Shocking Ward Environment"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Cardiology

(as a relative),

My Mother was admitted to East Surrey Hospital after a fall and it was found she had an arythmia. She was admitted through the amu and then to the Holmwood Ward - Staff were and always have ben absolutely brilliant, but the environment specifically on Holmwood Ward was shocking - the ward was perfectly clean but my mother was in a side room for a few days and I as shocked at the room when i came to visit. The room was dark and dingy without proper lighting, her bedside lamp didnt work and there was a wall built right up to the window (which didnt even open properly and I’m sure was dangerous). The paint was peeling, scratches and marks all over the walls. There was an empty tv bracket on the wal an other random holes and old brackets (ims sure these aren’t good for infections even though the place was spotlessly clean). The ward in general is falling apart and i think its been forgot about with all the brand new building work going on - all very impressive but dont let the old parts go to ruin! I dont want to get the staff in trouble as everyone was amazing and it was very very clean but my mother called me daily, upset and depressed at being stuck in a dark, dingy room such a depressing environment!! Please invest in some proper lighting, some tv/radios, fix the windows, fix the floor and paint the walls! It would make such a difference for your patients!!

Dear concerned and shocked daughter

Thank you for your feedback about our team on Holmwood; they do work very hard and are very focused on high quality patient care.

I apologise for the state of the environment; the ward has been subject to a partial upgrade this year and we are aware of the further works that needs to be completed. I will share your comments with our estates team.

I hope your mother is making a speedy recovery.

kind regards

Nicola Shopland

Divisional Chief Nurse Medicine
