"Cancellation of op."

About: Borders General Hospital / General Surgery (Ward 7)

(as a relative),

Late 2016 my wife fell and tore all rotator cuff Fenton's. Result -little use of right arm and hand and severe pain. Told op needed within 6 months otherwise large risk of arthritis. Eventually after loads of to-ing and fro-ing op fixed for 24 Jan 2018.

Pain so severe that arm useless. Phone call at 1.30pm day before op- cancelled due to A&E taking priority and also told "system installed mess!". Too late now, the damage is done. What a shambles and disgrace

I am really sorry that your wife's operation has been cancelled and feel. There has been a high volume of patients requring care for emergencies. Beds ringfenced for non-emergency procedures are having to be used to accomodate the increase of these patients. As a result we have not been able to treat patients needing non-urgent treatment. It has been disappointing to let patients down but we are trying our best. I can assure you that we will be schedule your wife for surgery as soons as the beds start becoming available. I would be grateful if you could please pass on our disappointment of not being to treat in atimely manner. I can also assure her that this delay may not make her risk of developing arthritis worse.

Thank you Mr Mehdi.

Your response is useful but I have to say that my wife' was told that after some recovery time after her operation she would be allowed to go home on the same day as the op. and that a ward bed would not be required. Perhaps it is policy of course that a ward bed needs to be available in case the recovery time needs to be extended, in that case I have answered my own question.

Best regards
