"Smoking"

About: Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust

The clinical staff have been great but the past two visits-going through Hartshead South-have been marred by smokers near the doors. We had to walk through them and smoke settled in the waiting room-I felt ill (am asthmatic) and the same thing happened today. Eventually an announcement said 'No smoking allowed. ' I know there are no smoking signs but they don't work.

Could there be a smoking shelter somewhere? I know it says no smoking in the grounds but when I worked there many people smoked in the grounds (usually bus stops and near the entrance) and my asthma was regularly set off. A shelter may help-I know it is a cost but could it be a solution?

We are very sorry you have had cause to raise these concerns regarding visitors smoking on site.

We are acutely aware of the problem and we have implemented a number of measures to address the issue you have raised. These measures include “no smoking” signage and tannoy systems outside main entrances. In addition security officers and car park hosts are instructed to carry out regular patrols around the site, to discourage smoking.

Unfortunately it is an ongoing issue, as we have no authority to prevent visitors to the hospital from smoking in the grounds. We also have to have a degree of empathy with patients and visitors who may be particularly distressed and use smoking as a mechanism for this.

The Trust’s aim is to discourage smoking on the hospital site and we work within the guidelines of Trust’s policies and procedures.

We do hope this response assures you that we are attempting to deal with the problem and will continue to do so. However, we are very sorry your experience of the hospital was marred by this issue.
