"Fantastic patient & family centred care of frail elderly"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Cardiology Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

Care received by my frail 91 yr old Dad when he was admitted to N & NUH on Christmas morning for a total of 24 days until his death.

Excellent care from A&E, AMUM & especially Gunthorpe cardiology ward who cared for him until he died peacefully.

The most striking thing about Gunthorpe ward was its relaxed, welcoming and inclusive approach to families and excellent patient care standards. Thanks to all staff involved. This approach should be an example of best practice on which to base care throughout the Trust.

On New Year’s Eve, the staff made a special fuss of my Dad had a sing song with him. He loved singing.

Special thanks to HCA Bibin who regularly gave basic care to my Dad including wash, shave, assisting with feeding and befriending. Dad always looked well presented. Dad was very grateful as were Dad’s daughters, who Bibin made a point of taking time to update about the basic care given to Dad, which we found reassuring. Communicating with anxious relatives can be daunting and may require special skills. Bibin did this confidently and sensitively. I wish to nominate him for a Trust award for his excellent frail elderly patient and family focused care.

Special thanks too, to Staff Nurse Ellie who communicated regularly with Dad & his family in an open and honest way.

Also, special mention to HCA Tish, Tracey & Staff Nurse Regina, agency staff nurse Janet.

It was a rollercoaster ride for 24 days as an in-pateint, with Dad deteriorating then fighting back on several occasions. The staff supported us throughout this.

Thanks to Dad’s Named Nurse Frankie and Dr Patel who oversaw his care and gave him the best chance of survival until all treatment failed and he was supported towards a comfortable, dignified death.

Dear Family Member

I am sorry to read that your father recently passed away and send you my condolences.

Thank you for writing with your thanks and praise for the care he received during his admission. I am pleased to read that staff were supportive, sensitive and kind. I will share this with all staff involved in his care as well as senior staff in the hospital. I note you wish to nominate a staff member for a staff award. I will also share this with our Communications Team as they co-ordinate this.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely note.

With kind regards

Sarah Eastwood, PALS Manager
