My mum was admitted today for a minor surgical procedure in C32 ward. It was carried out under general anaesthetic, which was a bit worrying considering she is 88 and frail. She has said that all the staff concerned deserve a gold medal for the way she was treated - all staff, nurses, doctors, reception staff, everyone that she had contact with. I was not able to be there as we live near London and, as this was quite unexpected it wasn't possible for us to be there.
From my point of view I would like to mention some of the staff that stood out in the contact that I had during the day, which was obviously very stressful.
The nurse, ward 31 and 32, who I had most contact with. He was flitting around C31 and C32 - on a 12 hour shift.
He called me with updates during the afternoon. So friendly and informative. I hope he is appreciated because he is so caring and seems happy in his job - hope he can stay that way.
Another member of staff - ward 32 - she took the time to locate the nurse that was looking after mum, even though at the time there were 32 patients on the ward.
The nurse that was looking after mum and confirmed that she could go home.
She told me to call the ward if there were any problems once mum got home.
The NHS gets a lot of bad press - not justified in this case.
I would be grateful if the staff I've mentioned get some recognition as this is what we need in the NHS.
Don't know how they keep doing it with an obvious smile when they speak to you.
These are difficult times, but these kind of staff need to be supported and nurtured and given a'gold medal' for the way that they are.
"Thank you for taking care of my Mum"
