"This team have to be commended."

About: University Hospital Ayr / Accident & Emergency

(as a carer),

My mother of 91 years was admitted for examination after a fall at home. She was treated with every due respect and was cared for with dignity and good humour, as my mother is a very sharp and witty woman. She was given every test necessary to ensure her well being was not affected by her fall. The consultant reassured my mother that she had no lasting medical issues after her fall. She was allowed to go home where she ate a KFC chicken bucket. This team have to be commended.

My only negative comment is that there seemed to be no facilities for hot drinks and snacks advertised. My mother was in the unit for 4 hours with no sustenance.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Avid,

I can only imagine how your mum and her sharp wit must have kept the staff on their toes. I personally like a wee laugh, it keeps you going.

About the food and drink, I suspect from this that neither of you had any. I am sorry about that, it is a long time to wait without anything to eat or drink. I spoke with a member of staff in the Ayr ED to clarify the situation regarding the facilities for hot drinks and snacks.

In the waiting area, before being taken through into the ED there are three vending machines. Two sell snacks and one has hot drinks. once you have been taken through to ED, I understand that staff can make a cup of tea or coffee if they asked (and they are free to do so).

I am glad your mum did not break anything during her fall. I will be very pleased to pass on your feedback to the team and I am sure it will make their day. I am also sure that now the food/drink issue has been raised, the staff will reflect on how best to address it.

Thank you so much for taking time to share this mainly positive experience and I hope your mum is fully recovered now,

best wishes,

Eunice
