I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and luckily, due to the diligence of a Junior Doctor, was diagnosed at an early stage. I was advised that it may be possible to cure it with surgery to remove the affected section of oesophagus along with chemotherapy running concurrently (no pun!), with radiotherapy (chemo-radiation), to kill the cancerous cells and shrink the tumour. I subsequently had the chemo/radio-therapy followed by the surgery to remove the oesophagus.
The surgeons were marvellous as were the support staff. The post-op care I received in the Critical Care Unit, the High Dependency Unit and Surgical Ward was second to none. I can't single out individual staff - they were all terrific. These are extremely skilled, dedicated staff who have managed to cure my aggressive cancer which ordinarily has a very low survival rate. This means I may yet live to dance at my granddaughter's wedding but without these extraordinarily skilled teams with their top-drawer treatment, I wouldn't have lasted out until the end of this year. That's why I had no option other than to score 5 stars in each of the categories. I don't have the words to convey my gratitude except to say a big thank you to all involved.
