About: Alton Community Hospital

I have attended the Leg Clinic at Alton Hospital for over 12 months on a weekly basis, I have also had outpatient appointments at the Hospital.

Every visit has been as pleasant an experience as possible considering it is a Hospital, all the Staff one meets are great, the place is clean and has a good ambience on the whole.

The leg clinic has been moved from a "ward" upstairs to a cubicle downstairs, much as I appreciate the reasons for this move I can't but feel that the current situation is NOT good for the Staff or patients, it is like being treated in a corridor and the subject of bio security with those of us with open ulcer wounds does not seem to have been well thought through by the management.

Dear Chris

Thank you for your very positive feedback on the care that you have received at the Alton Leg Clinic.

To address your concerns about the move of the clinic from an upstairs ward to the downstairs clinic space, I am very sorry that you do not feel this is a suitable arrangement. As I am sure you are aware we had to move the clinic to comply with fire safety regulations, and patient safety is our main concern.

We have an infection control nurse on site who works closely with the teams to ensure the leg clinic meets very strict infection control regulations, which it currently does. Throughout the move this person was in close contact with the teams ensuring the area met the standards required to treat patients. We would not run the clinic if it were to put any patients at risk. The staff adhere to strict guidelines on maintaining a clean and sterile environment in which they treat patients.

The outstanding clinical care they give ensures the highest rate of healing among leg clinics and the staff pride themselves on this. We have had no reported cases of patients with infections acquired while under our care, which is evidence of the high standards of hygiene and infection control that they adhere to.

I am sorry that the clinic feels like it is in a corridor, I can assure you this is not our intention. It should not be used as an access route by any other members of the public visiting the hospital and all the people in the area are patients undergoing treatment in the leg clinic or occasionally a physiotherapy treatment area. We will monitor this to ensure the area remains a clinical treatment area only.

Thank you again for your feedback, it is always valuable to help us get the best care for patients.

Best wishes,

Claire Horsfield
