"Shambles"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Ophthalmology

I was sent by my GP as I have some sort of membrane growing on both eyes. I googled it and it was textbook Pterygium, a membrane which grows on the conjunctiva and it made my GP nervous because it can grow over the pupil ruining eyesight. It's not rare at all.

I think all in all I was at the eye clinic 5 times. In each and every one of those times I was told that I was suffering a different thing, or in once case, a doctor said he didn't know what it was. One blamed an eyelash growing at an angle (but omitted to explain the other eye and the membrane and no eyelash problem). Another told me that I couldn't be suffering from a Pterygium because the UK isn't sunny enough whereas another doc said that's exactly what I have. Another told me that I was suffering from dry eyes, saying I do not create enough tears! No tests for that and didn't listen to me when I said it's not true while my eyes were watering in the room in front of her!!

I was also given various prescriptions on each visit, nothing made a difference apart from my wallet.

Then there's more shambles. Get given an appointment time and never get seen on time. Sit waiting down a corridor next to a toilet that stinks. In the middle of eye tests or consultations staff come barging into the room and interrupt. And all in all I was left with a very strong impression that this dept has absolutely no idea what to do with me and I asked to be dismissed from their list. I will go back to my GP at some stage and ask to see someone else

Dear HappyJoe,

That is really disappointing and not the quality of care we expect to provide to our local community. I can't imagine how worrying it must have been for you to learn of your diagnosis and would really encourage you to make contact with me or a member of my team so that we can look at what we could do differently. I have shared your experience with the Ophthalmology leads and I know they are looking closely at what has happened here.

I am sorry you currently do not feel able to come back. We do however certainly need to learn from your experience and so I hope you feel able to make contact. The number to call is 01279 82 72 11 on weekdays, 10am to 4pm.
