Whilst on holiday in September my GP received the results of my MRI scan.
He telephoned me and requested that I go immediately to Hull Royal Infirmary as I had Cauda Equina which needed urgent surgery.
I arrived at HRI at approximately 8.00 pm and was seen by the A&E Doctor who called in the 'on call' Neurosurgeon.
I was admitted to the hospital with the operation planned for the following day.
On the morning of the operation one particular consultant visited me.
He had discussed my case with 3 colleagues and as I had no red flag symptoms they did not feel an operation was the best course of action. I was asked if I was happy with this decision, which I was.
I was discharged and provided with several 'phone numbers and the email address of this consultant's secretary, should I be at all concerned before my outpatient appointment.
At the next appointment I was discharged although still unable to stand upright.
This consultant felt that although it may take time, I would recover without intervention. A couple of weeks later I had a problem with my leg and emailed the consultant's secretary.
I was amazed when, in less than an hour, I received a 'phone call from the consultant.
He discussed the problem and suggested remedies.
During the whole process I had been receiving physio and acupuncture which I paid for privately.
Yesterday I was able to attend my final, I hope, Outpatient clinic where I was able to confirm that I had no pain and was able to walk straight!
This consultant was delighted with my progress and I thanked him for avoiding an unnecessary operation.
Wonderful patient care in which I felt part of the decision process.
"Excellent Patient Care"
