"Pros and cons"

About: Langley Green Hospital

Being my first experience of adult mental health inpatient treatment I wasn't sure what to expect.

After being transferred at 3am I was pretty disorientated. The staff were plesant enough but did make an assumption that I know the system and didn't really allow for it being an overwhelming experience. I was not shown around coral ward and had to find out where everything was on my own. I was not informed about medication prescribed at first and this was very distressing. While most staff where kind and caring a few staff seemed to rely a little to heavily on physical intervention. I was covered in bruises from face down restraint and there was no follow up or debrief after these incidents. The no smoking policy is strictly followed by staff , but struggle to see how restraining someone who is not allowed leave for smoking in the garden is justified. Most staff did try to engage in conversation and seemed to genuinely care. The ward manager made a point of being avaliable and approachable.

Amber ward was used as a threat to many patients but I'm not surie why as it's not the awful environment that is described. In fact while the same amount of physical interventions happened I did not get any bruises while in Amber. The staff on the whole we're friendly and caring. The seclusion room was often dirty and again never a follow up afterwards. Staff at times seemed to be solely focussed on what they felt needed to be done and patient dignity did not seem to be considered. Visiting times are also difficult as anyone who works is unable to visit during the week.

On the whole most staff were kind and compassionate. The domestic teams always had a smile and also were up for a chat.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent time with us at Langley Green Hospital. I am the Matron for both Amber and Coral Ward and I was sorry to hear of your mixed experience. Your feedback is important to us and will help us improve our services and care to all of our patients.

All of our staff receive induction training prior to commencing their work on the wards and this includes ensuring patients are orientated to the ward and provided with any information they request with regard to their medication and treatment. I am disappointed to hear that this was not completed during your stay. I will be raising your concern with my team in our upcoming away day this week and ensuring that all patients receive a proper induction and welcome to our ward, hospital and services.

I was also sorry to hear that you felt staff relied too heavily on physical interventions. I would like to reassure you that all staff receive training in PMVA, prevention and management of violence and aggression, where restraining is used as a last intervention. It is a mandatory requirement that staff update their training yearly. Where possible, we use the least restrictions and our priority will always be to maintain the safety of our patients and others on the ward. I am more than happy to meet with you in person to address any more concerns you have with regard to PMVA use in our hospital.

Thank you for highlighting improvements that are needed in our seclusion suite. We have since renovated the suite and will ensure that it is kept clean at all times.

Our current visiting hours are from 10am – 7pm during the week, however this is currently under review to ensure that we are providing carer’s, friends and family more flexible visiting times.

I am glad to hear that despite some negative experiences, you found our staff to be caring, kind and compassionate during your stay and that management were available and approachable, I will be feeding this back to both the wards.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to meet in person, please email me at scarlett.jennings@sussexpartnership.nhs.uk
