Being my first experience of adult mental health inpatient treatment I wasn't sure what to expect.
After being transferred at 3am I was pretty disorientated. The staff were plesant enough but did make an assumption that I know the system and didn't really allow for it being an overwhelming experience. I was not shown around coral ward and had to find out where everything was on my own. I was not informed about medication prescribed at first and this was very distressing. While most staff where kind and caring a few staff seemed to rely a little to heavily on physical intervention. I was covered in bruises from face down restraint and there was no follow up or debrief after these incidents. The no smoking policy is strictly followed by staff , but struggle to see how restraining someone who is not allowed leave for smoking in the garden is justified. Most staff did try to engage in conversation and seemed to genuinely care. The ward manager made a point of being avaliable and approachable.
Amber ward was used as a threat to many patients but I'm not surie why as it's not the awful environment that is described. In fact while the same amount of physical interventions happened I did not get any bruises while in Amber. The staff on the whole we're friendly and caring. The seclusion room was often dirty and again never a follow up afterwards. Staff at times seemed to be solely focussed on what they felt needed to be done and patient dignity did not seem to be considered. Visiting times are also difficult as anyone who works is unable to visit during the week.
On the whole most staff were kind and compassionate. The domestic teams always had a smile and also were up for a chat.
