My elderly Mother was urgently referred to the Eye Clinic after visiting her Optician with deteriorating eye sight. She was seen the following day , diagnosed with wet AMD and treated at that same visit. Unfortunately and quite unexpectedly by everyone concerned she experienced a bleed at the injection site and lost her sight in that eye as a result. My mother has a congenital cataract in her other eye and so was blind. This was extremely traumatic for her and the clinic staff reassured her and looked after her on the eye ward for some considerable time as I had to travel over from North Yorkshire to come and pick her up to take her home.
The bleed eventually resolved over the next weeks but the care and consideration given to her in this predicament by the eye clinic staff and Consultant was outstanding. Ongoing monitoring has continued to be given over the past year in order to preserve as much of her sight as possible although she is now registered as extremely sight impaired.
At first she was able to see the same Consultant which was very reassuring, thereafter others were involved in her care. Most recently when she was concerned that her vision had deteriorated and this was reported to the clinic she had an appointment in less than a week and saw again the Consultant who knew her history. She and I appreciated this.
Thankfully he was able to reassure her that all was unchanged but monitoring would continue.
