"Missed fracture"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Radiology (X-rays and Scans)

(as a service user),

I had a fall and hurt my ankle, I attended A+E, it was a saturday night, i was there around 22:30, 11ish. I was seen fairly quickly and promptly given pain relief by the nurse as I was pretty sore. I was sent for an x-ray, i asked the radiographer if everything was ok, to which they replied, "yes, there is nothing broken". I was put back through to see the nurse, given a small support and sent on my way, with no crutches etc. I obviously took the hospitals word that my ankle was ok, and struggled over the next few days, i live in a top floor flat so was stuck, as my ankle got worse over the next few days, the bruising started to go up my leg etc.

Then on the wednesday i got a phonecall from the nurse who had looked after me, to tell me to come back as my ankle was broken and needed a cast, so i had to somehow get to the hospital and manage my stairs, luckily a family member could come and collect me.

Overall the way i was treated was nice, however i am just concerned that a fracture could be missed? What if my xrays had not been looked at again? Or what if this happens to someone else? etc. When i was shown my x-ray i could see the fracture right away.

HI Louise30,

Many thanks for your comments regarding your broken ankle. We are sorry that you have the discomfort of a fracture and that you had to come back to the hospital for further treatment.

Without your details we cannot comment on your particular case. However, what we can tell you is that once Emergency Department examinations are x-rayed and reported all positive reports are matched up with our patients’ Emergency Department notes. The report and notes are reviewed by an ED consultant or senior registrar and appropriate action is taken.

We are sorry, but cannot comment why your fracture was not identified in the first place, although if we could see your x-ray images we would be able to identify if your injury was particularly subtle at the time of x-ray. If you would like to take this further please feel free to contact me direct or theNHS Grampian Feedback Service.
