"Completely awful experience."

About: The Surgery (Barretts Grove)

I use the depot injection as a form of ongoing contraception and have been doing so for the past 18 months to 2 years. I have had this injection in may different sexual health clinics and at my old doctors surgery and never had a problem. I called my new GP, Barretts Grove and requested an appointment around two weeks before my injection was due.

They said it was no problem, they can cater to what I need and booked me in on the deadline for my injection which was 12 weeks prior to my last injection.

I turn up at the surgery on the day of my appointment and it wasn't until I was being seen that the nurse proceeds to tell me that I cannot have the injection today as they don't carry the correct injection at the surgery, it needs to be prescribed by a doctor so they can order it in.

This was never communicated to me on the phone or prior to the appointment. They didn't even call me back when they realised it wasn't there and I was coming in for that injection specifically. I had zero communication until I was turned away on the day I needed it.

The nurse then proceeded to tell me that the appointments were now all booked for the next week and I had no chance of getting in with a doctor before this anyway so to go to a walk in clinic. I asked if she could recommend where to go, she fumbled around with numerous bits of paper, only to tell me that they were old copies with no useful information.

This contraception is extremely important and I've now been left in the lurch by my GP who I trusted in to make my appointment.

There's no excuse for this.

Thank you for your feedback. I apologise for this experience and I agree that the advice and treatment that you received was substandard. Training will be provided to the receptionists concerned as everyone should be aware of the prescription system for the depot injection. I can confirm that this has now been rectified.

The practice nurse should have been able to arrange your depot injection within 24 hours after being seen, when it was made apparent that you did not have the injection with you when seen.

I can confirm that your feedback will be discussed with all staff members at the next practice meeting. Please do not hesitate to contact the practice manager if you would like to discuss this further. I do hope that we can improve on your future experiences at the practice.
