"Maternity"

About: Rochdale Infirmary / Maternity Royal Oldham Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

I gave birth to my little boy September 2017 and the care I got from the staff were amazing. I had high blood pressure the last few weeks in pregnancy, my community midwife Abi always did her best for me. Everyone on triage were great, they comforted me so well as I’m anxious around needles and hospitals, especially Kelly. As I reached my due date I was induced due to my blood pressure. I was very scared and nervous but the midwife and a student midwife welcomed me and made me feel reassured when I got there. I progressed very quickly with my waters breaking about 20 minutes later. The midwife checked on me regularly which was really nice and made me feel at ease.

The staff then changed over and I felt like I didn’t get the help and care like I did from everyone else so far. I started to get very painful contractions, it was my first baby and I didn’t know what to expect. The midwife didn’t check on me regular like previously, she didn’t talk to me much or comfort me. I was in a lot of pain and felt like she stood and watched me while I tightly gripped the rails on my bed. I was put on the monitor where it was beeping constantly. I kept pressing my buzzer for assistance, to be told it’s because I keep moving or I need to be sat up more or lay down more, I was made to feel like it was my fault it was beeping, but I listened to the midwife and tried to move to where she said in between contractions even though I was in agony! I was then examined after what felt like 1hour+ of beeping and I was 9cm!

I was then transferred to delivery where Nicola took over. As soon as I got there I felt so much more relaxed and trusted her straight away. She plugged me into her monitor and acted on the beeping instantly! My little boy was in distress and was born about 10minutes later, with forceps delivery. I can’t thank the staff enough, it is quite scary when loads of doctors/midwifes come flooding into my room but at the time I felt like I was in such good hands, they were all amazing.

The care I got after I gave birth was great, I can’t fault it at all. The staff at Rochdale where I had my scans were also good, especially Sam who was really friendly and sat and talked to me when I was nervous.

I’m really grateful of how brilliant and hardworking the staff were throughout my pregnancy but it’s a shame to dwell on one part of it.

Thank you for taking the time to share your pregnancy and birth experience. It is good to hear that you were supported by your Community Midwife Abi and in our Triage by Kelly. It is also pleasing to hear that you were well supported by Nicola on the Labour ward and Sam in Antenatal Clinic at Rochdale. I will share your comments directly with these staff members, I know that they will be delighted. We always strive to provide compassionate care so I am sorry that this wasn't the case following a change over of staff. Please accept our apologies for any distress that this caused. I am more than happy to look into your concerns further if you wish.

Please contact me directly at: Samantha.whelan@pat.nhs.uk

Once again thank you for your feedback.
