"Grandad not fed- Richard Stevens ward"

About: East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

My grandad has been in hospital for 2 weeks on “Richard Stevens ward” and the last 4 nights (atleast) when we have come in to visit, his dinner has been out of reach and cold and the bread stale....He has dementia and is unable to feed himself so as a family it is very distressing and concerning that we keep seeing him without having any food.

We have also been informed by people visiting other patients on the ward that they have witnessed my grandads food being left repeatedly and no one coming to feed him or give him fluids.

When raising our concerns with nurses said they are understaffed and rely on relatives to help out. But this is not good enough! We were even told the times for breakfast lunch and dinner so we could come in and feed him ourselves! Nurses had a bad attitude and were very defensive that we’d even mentioned the issue.

It makes you concerned about what is happening when we are not there!

I can’t wait for my grandad to leave this terrible place and be moved elsewhere!! Understaffing is no excuse for not feeding someone!

We are very sorry to hear about your concerns regarding your granddad.

We would suggest you speak to the Ward Manager about the concerns you have in order that they can look into these for you.

If your granddad is no longer a patient with us, but you would like us to look into his care, please contact the PALS team.

You can do this by:

Email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net

We hope your granddad is making a good recovery.
