I have a small lump on my index finger. It has been there for 4 years and I had expert advice 4 years ago to ignore it. Over the past year it has got larger, skin colour has changed and it hurts when I sew. I thought this should be checked with no high expectations of treatment. My GP referred me to the local MSK service. I was originally given a telephone consultation but was called just before the appointed time to say I needed a face to face appointment. I was sent an appointment by mail (4 bits of paper and a booklet) with an extended scope practitioner. This is a most unhelpful and confusing term. (Was I going have my cyst examined by an extended scope?)
I arrived at the appointed time to be told by the receptionist that they did not have a list with my name on it. After a wait of 10 minutes I was called into a cubicle by the ESP. I gather that an ESP is a physiotherapist with extra training. I was looking for reassurance but received a very patronising consultation that informed me that it was only a cyst and to give my hands a rest when I am sewing. The lump was squeezed very hard and I gather I was meant to cry out in pain. The pain came later and lasted all day. I have been offered an U/S sound appt with a view to possible aspiration of the cyst and a telephone appt after the U/S.
In my experience of working with patients I would always make the patient feel valued and relaxed. I would escort them to the room and help them out of the room. I would try not to patronise. This was not my experience on this occasion.
