"Positive experience"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Maternity

I gave birth to my son on the labour ward on 1st November 2017 and although the labour was not without difficulty and we had a 5 night stay in hospital afterwards , the care my son and I received was excellent.

My waters broke in the early hours of 31st October and we attended the labour ward and were taken through to a lovely room straight away and spoke with the midwife. Next stages were well explained and I was informed if labour didn't start within 24 hours I would be induced. We went home but due to a change in my baby's movement pattern, I called the hospital and was told to go back and attend the ante natal ward. My baby's heartbeat was monitored and I was seen by the doctor and informed that I'd be induced. After a long wait I was given induction meds at 5pm and the contractions started soon after. The midwiife was absolutely lovely and was kind enough to move me to a private room as the antenatal ward needed to be used as a post natal ward for ladies and babies as the post natal ward was full. The midwife and the healthcare assistant on shift at the time were even so kind as to bring a bed down for my husband. When it was time to go through to the labour ward I was having difficulty delivering my baby so the consultant attended and performed an episiotomy and ventouse delivery. The experience was really positive and resulted in safe delivery of my amazing son. All the staff in attendance were calm, helpful and kind and made sure we were 'involved' and made sure the experience was as positive as possible.

My son developed jaundice and we spent 5 days on the post natal ward while he had uv treatment. All the staff - midwives, healthcare assistants, everyone we came into contact with were so dedicated and helpful.

I feel really fortunate to have had such a positive experience for my first birth. The maternity unit is so busy however and I do worry that without more funding and resources the high standards of care may not be sustainable.

Thank you again to all the staff who looked after us.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of our maternity service. It is always a pleasure to hear from women that have had a positive birth experience despite experiencing difficulties along the journey. We always strive to maintain high standards and provide our women and their babies with safe and compassionate care. This is important to us because we know that special memories are often created during pregnancy and birth that last a lifetime. I will share your story with all the departments that you mentioned as I know that the staff will be delighted to hear that the care that they provided was well received.

Once again thank you for feedback.
