"Positive reflections re treatment at..."

About: Pinderfields General Hospital / Accident and emergency

On Saturday evening, Jan 6th, at around 7.10pm my wife, concerned at my behaviour and suspecting I was having a stroke, rang the 111 service. After giving details of my symptoms, the call operator immediately said she would send an ambulance. One duly arrived within 20 minutes and after various tests I was taken to the A&E dept at Pinderfields Hospital, arriving around 8.40pm, followed by my wife soon after. I was very quickly seen by the nursing staff and blood pressure etc done immediately. I then waited to be seen by a doctor and as it was a Saturday evening we knew we would have to wait a while as there were more urgent cases to be seen.We were called through at around midnight and seen by a very nice male doctor. He was extremely efficient and friendly and gave me a thorough examination, all the time explaining what he was doing and why. He confirmed I had more than likely suffered a TIA, mini stroke. He made an appointment for me to attend the stroke clinic the following day, Sunday, gave me an aspirin tablet and allowed me to go home.

I attended the stroke clinic the following day and saw another doctor. Again, I was given a thorough examination, together with full explanations as to what he was doing and why. He made me 2 further appointments for the following day to attend Gate 17 for a CT scan and a carotid Dopplers ultrasound and gave me a prescription for the necessary medication. He even went out of his way to lead us out and point us in the right direction for the pharmacy.

I attended again on Monday 8th Jan at 8.15am for the scans and was able to leave the hospital around 9.30am. The doctor rang me later the same morning with the results, which thankfully were all good.

The service and the treatment I have received right from the contact with the 111 service, the paramedics who attended me at home, the nursing staff and doctor in A&E (and also including the lady cleaning the area in A&E), the doctor and the staff in Gate 17 has been excellent at all times. Every person I have seen has been efficient, professional, friendly and informative. Considering the extreme daily pressures you in the NHS are working under, the wonderful way in which I was treated could not be bettered. Thank you to everyone I dealt with. You are all doing a marvellous job.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on NHS Choices.

Given everything you have described, I can imagine how worrying both you and your wife must have felt.

I am pleased to hear that the outcome from the results were good.

It is lovely to read that staff provided you with a high standard of care.

This is something staff strive to achieve and it is evident that you had a positive experience whilst being in hospital.

I will pass on your lovely comments to all of the staff as receiving feedback is really important to them.

Thank you again and I wish you well.

Kind regards

Clare Blackburn
