"Referred to A&E but left without help"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I attended A& E with a severe flare up of my chronic pain condition. I was referred by my GP as my normal medication was not working and I needed immediate strong pain relief. I was given no sympathy or compassion by the doctor. I was not treated effectively and was sent away with no treatment to manage at home having insufficient treatment while in A& E. This meant I was left to suffer in severe pain for a number of days with no effective pain relief. I don't think the doctor did a  proper assessment and I felt treated as though I was lying about my condition. I felt like the doctor didn't believe me or care about my pain. The experience has left me feeling angry, embarrassed and not wanting to return when I have flare ups in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I was sorry to hear that you had such a poor visit to the A&E department and apologise for this. This is not the standard of care we hope to provide.

If you are able to contact PALS (Patient Advice & Liaison Service) here at the hospital (Tel: 01522 707071) to inform them of your name, I will be able to investigate this further and provide you with a full response.

Regards

Dr Meg Kelly,

Consultant A&E, Lincoln County Hospital
