"My unexpeced stay"

About: Churchill Hospital / Nephrology

I had a knee replacement operation at Swindon on 11 December feeling very fit before my op. 2 days later I felt lethargic with no motivation to do anything.. On 16 December I was transferred to the renal unit of the Churchill Hospital with kidney failure. Within a few hours of admittance I had a line inserted to allow dialysis. After around 6 more dialysis sessions, my kidneys had resumed their function with the help of steroids.

There has been no explanation why the kidneys had packed up.

Apparently they may not have improved.

There are several positive points about my experience.

Immediate ambulance service getting me from Swindon to Oxford during the current NHS crisis.

Immediate admittance and examination.

Professional loving calm care with plenty of time for treatment, discussions questions and answers.

100% efficient devotion from every department, registrars, consultants, doctors, nurses, health aid workers, office staff, maintenance staff, dieticians, physiotherapists, pharmacists, and cleaners.

All this through the Christmas and New Year holidays.

To conclude I am very very lucky to have come through this unpleasant shock to my health with care that could not have been improved and I now understand a lot more about the complexities of the human body than I ever did before. A long haul in front of me to return to normal life with the physiotherapy to help my new knee as well as the medications required to assist my kidneys. A positive attitude is paramount.

I was discharged with a comprehensive report including a clear explanatory chart for daily medication to be taken on 7 January 2018

A special thank you to you all
