"Templehill Surgery and Combined Assessment Unit"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran University Hospital Ayr / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU)

(as the patient),

I am a very healthy person, aged 68. Feeling very frequent aching tightness in the top right of my chest for about 3 weeks.  Tightening every 8 minutes or so. Thought it was a chest infection but it never got better.  Eventually at the beginning of December 2017 I made an appointment at the GP surgery.  She was very thorough and did a few tests (all seemed ok) but she sent me that morning to the CAU at Ayr Hospital for further investigation, for fear of a heart condition.

I was given excellent treatment, or should I say assessment, as, after tests, ECG, x-ray, blood pressure, discussion, etc they really couldn't find anything wrong with me!  An idea that it may be costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage which joins the ribs to the breastbone) was mooted but not confirmed.  I still have this tightening but less frequently and can take ibuprofen to deaden the pain (not a dreadful pain).  I was treated so well.  I had all the tests done that morning.  Spoke with the consultant, lead nurse and others (ecg and radiology specialists) and seriously could not have had better attention from everyone - from the GP to all the hospital specialists. If the pain continued then I was to phone direct and they would put me on the treadmill (right word!?) for further tests.  But since I had great results from all the tests, no breathlessness, excellent blood pressure, clear x-ray I have felt a great relief and believe that now the condition is abating and healing itself.

If anything this website was not the best to sort out.  'Tell your story' just somehow doesn't work!  I'm an English teacher and wasn't sure if this was the feedback bit at first!  Cant imagine how some people would be able to give you feedback!  However, it is non-threatening and once I started was fine (though some poor soul has to read it all - boring for everyone else except me!!)

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Donella,

Now you have me worried. I am one of those 'poor souls' and I am responding to an English teacher!! The funny thing about grammar is that you don't know what you don't know. That said, I may be sad, but I have been responding to Care opinion posts for nearly four years and they are definitely not boring. They can be Interesting, illuminating, helpful heart breaking, sad .... and so on. I was delighted to read yours.

Thank you so much for sharing this story. I will share this extensively and I am sure it will 'warm the cockles' of the teams.

I am glad you are on the mend,

Best wishes,

Eunice
