"Poor service"

About: Northern General Hospital / Accident and emergency

My dad is terminally ill with cancer of the throat.

On the evening of 23/12/2017 he was taken very badly with difficulties in swallowing and could not even keep fluids down. He had been suffering a few days before. I contacted out of hours doctor who referred us to A&E at the Northern General. We went in around 10pm and sent the next 4 hours in the corridor of the A&E and then after asking staff about how long will the wait be I was told from a rude member of the nursing staff she could not give me a time scale and that I would have to wait. I did tell the staff about my dad medical condition and that he had nothing to drink or eat the out of hours GP we saw confirmed my dad was more likely to be dehydrated.

We waiting a further 4 hours and at which point my dad became very agitated. No observation were done or even a member of staff to come ask how we were or to inform us if the current situation. At 6.00 am the next mourning still waiting I asked to see a doctor. I was told to wait and no-one came. No observation. I was discussed at the behaviour of staff. 3 other patients that had come in after my dad got seen. The staff could not confirm what number we were or no empathy was demonstrated. At 7:30 am me and my dad walked out through A&E and staff saw us walking out and no-one said anything.

Totally disgusted I was very upset and dad was distraught. When we got home we waited for a few hours and called an ambulance and my dad was taken to Rotherham General and my dad was seen there in 30 minutes and within 2 hours he was referred to a ward and a drip was given. Thank you

Rotherham General .

Shame on the staff of A&E Northern General who were covering on the night of the 23rd and mourning 24th.
