I think that the older people's mental health day centres are a waste of money. I think they're nice places to go to and if money was no object, I could see why we'd have them because they are pleasant. But in a time when everyone is scrounging around for money, I think these could go.
In my opinion, they serve more as places for entertainment than rehabilitation. I know that some people are taken to the day centres to exercise in a group but there must be a more cost effective way to do this. Surely if a mobile physiotherapist could come to people's homes and help them to exercise there this would cost less and be less difficult for service users. It's also quite costly for us to get buses or taxis.
I don't think we can justify the day centres continuing to exist when we're having to reduce beds elsewhere and maybe cut the resource centres.
