"Asked why I came to this hospitall???"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

So I am currently sat in a&e with an infected abscess. Upon my initial assessment the nurse asked me why I came to this hospital as I should have gone to Cramlington!!?

As she says this I point to the huge sign next to her stating that ‘this hospital treats urgent but non-life threatening conditions’ it then provides a list where ABSCESS is clearly listed!

I suffer from reaccuring abscesses and need to be seen by the surgical team for drainage. I know this as it has happened 20+ times over the years... the nurse has booked me in to see their GP despite me having already had a course of antibiotics prescribed by my GP!

Last time I was at this hospital 2 members of staff told me that they were encouraging patients just to go to Cramlington because eventually they hoped to close their a&e. This is disgusting! They are currently still an urgent care centre and should be carrying out their duties as a hospital. Not just passing them on!

I expect this to be a very long day!!!

Dear Clare,

Firstly many apologies for your wait and for the conflicting advice you have received about where to go for treatment. You were absolutely right to access Urgent Care at North Tyneside with the complaint you had and there is certainly no hidden agenda to close this department. I'm really not sure why you've received advice to go to the Northumbria with an abscess ? I am very sorry for any frustration and inconvenience caused.

I'd obviously like to look into this in more detail - can you confirm your name, date of birth and the time and date of arrival in the department so that I can understand more about who was on duty ? My email is Annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk

Many thanks,

Annie
