I had robotic colorectal surgery on Friday 3rd November 2017 to remove large polyp and part of my descending bowel which left me with an illiostomy.
I was in Critical Care until Monday evening then was transferred to Ward 12. By Wednesday evening after 6 days in hospital I felt I was ready to go home and after tests my surgeon was happy to discharge me and went home to continue my recovery. My medication was paracetamol and dihydrocodeine which I continued to take for the next 2 weeks to aid my recovery which I then I reduced daily and by week 4 I was without regular pain relief and since then there has only been the odd time I've needed to take any pain relief. Also I have been visited by the stoma nurse weekly until the week before Christmas as by then we decided that I was coping extremely well and unless there was a problem I didn't need her to visit anymore. I also had my post op on the 19th December and my surgeon was happy with my progress. All in all, I think after the extent of my surgery, my recovery has been marvellous and although I am still taking it easy I feel fit, healthy and have gained weight and can't believe only 9 weeks ago I had what I feel was a major life changing operation. I do believe having the robotic surgery and the constant care of my surgeon and all the hospital staff that looked after me has helped speed up my recover and I can't thank them enough. I now await further tests and hopefully all being well will be able to have a reversal of my stoma.
