Whilst in the USA I suffered a detached retina in my right eye and had to have emergency surgery. The care was excellent but at every appointment I was asked my name, for identify documents and my insurance details.
I had to pay over $2000 for my initial treatment whilst my travel insurance was being sorted. But this story is mainly to say thank you for the excellent and speedy follow up treatment since I returned home to Edinburgh.
I saw my optometrist at 20:20 vision on George Street who made an electronic referral to the NHS Lothian Eye Pavilion where I was seen 3 days later in the acute referral clinic.
The doctor at the eye pavilion thoroughly examined my eye and provided reassurance and made a further follow up at the macular clinic. My eye continues to heal well and my vision is almost back to normal. At such a busy time for the NHS, the quality and speed of the treatment provided has been excellent.
Everyone was friendly, helpful, happy to respond to my numerous questions and reassuring. I am so pleased that I live in a country where healthcare is free at the point of delivery and is provided on the basis of need not the ability to pay.
