"Horrible early pregnancy unit"

About: North Middlesex Hospital / Maternity care

I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant and I have to say most of my experience so far has been great. i found out I was 5 weeks pregnant due to having an infection. I was given a scan at the EPU (early pregnancy unit) because of bleeding and cramping.

When i arrived the people at reception were rude and made me feel uncomfortable. Once booked in I sat and waited for my name to be called. There was me, another woman and another woman with her partner in the waiting room and I could see the doctor go to the reception to get my notes.she took the notes she walked to the other side of the waiting room and started to shout my personal details back to the receptionist (name, D.O.B...so on). She then called me into the room and confirmed my details although I can't understand why because she had just confirmed it with everyone in the waiting room. She told me to take my trousers off and lay on the bed. Without explaining what she was going to do she started the scan (an internal scan). I didn't know what I was meant to be able to see but I kept asking her what she was doing but she wouldn't tell me. My partner also asked her questions but she didnt even acknowledge my partner. After she had finished the scan she said I was only 5 weeks pregnant and it was to early to see anything but she could see the yolk sack ( I think that's what it is called). She booked me an appointment for 2 weeks later. at the 2nd appointment I had the same greeting at reception...rude.

I was called into the room again and got myself ready for the scan. Just before she was about to start the scan one of the receptionists walked into the room! At this point you are incredibly vulnerable and she should know that but she didnt even knock. It's bad enough she came bowling in but it shocked me even more that what she came in for was a moan about someone who works in the EPU. It was very unprofessional and I felt really embarrassed. Once she started the scan I was asking questions like is everything okay? is there a baby there? She made a little grunt which made me nervous and feared the worst. Just before she finished she moved the screen and showed me and my partner the flickering little heartbeat. Although we were so happy I didn't feel i could show any signs of happiness because she made me feel so uncomfortable. Her attitude was as if I had forced her to check my baby and that she had something better to do.

I have to say as a woman you feel very vulnerable at this moment in a pregnancy especially when you have only just found out you're pregnant, dont know if the baby is okay and don't know the first thing about whats happening.

I have had concerns every time I come to the hospital because I dread that something like this will happen again. It hasn't, thank God. But now I'm starting to worry about my Labour because of this.

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry that communication has been so poor from both the receptionist and the doctor involved. This is unacceptable.

I would be very grateful if you would contact me directly or PALS so that we can look into this in more detail. I want every family to feel safe and secure in the care that they receive, to understand what is going to happen to them and to spoken to with warmth and understanding. Please email northmid.pals@nhs.net
