"My sister gave birth in the corridor, without help"

About: Newham General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a relative),

My sister gave birth at Newham hospital - I think they were unprofessional, rude and did not help my sister at all.

Her waters broke and they told her to go back home and return to the hospital the next day so they can start inducement.

She did so but when she returned to the hospital she was made to wait for 12 hours before giving her a bed - and before starting inducement. No room was given to her so she gave birth while in the corridor - no midwife or any other professional body present - they kept ignoring her totally.

When time to give birth she had the urge to push - the staff who was trying to get her now in the triage birth centre was telling her do not push and physically closing her legs not to allow her to push. Finally she gave birth before going to the birth room. No one cared whether this lady and the baby were at risk or not - they ignored her completely. No help was given, no support.

After an exhausting experience she feels vulnerable and disappointed in the healthcare she was given. The midwives are there to support you and not neglect you. To make the experience better and not fearful and unsatisfactory.

I would not recommend the hospital at all to new mothers.

Dear apusdr74

We're sorry to hear that your sister's experience with Newham Maternity Services wasn't to the usual high standard we strive for on a daily basis. We pride ourselves on our safe and compassionate care and for you to not feel she received this is unacceptable and we can only apologise for this.

If you would like to discuss this experience further then please contact the PALS Team by email: pals@bartshealth.nhs.uk or by calling 0207 055 5603.

Kind Regards,
