My baby has a tongue tie. He is bottle fed due to medication I take which in my experience in the eyes of the NHS already makes me a failure. I requested a tongue tie division from my GP at my baby's 6 week check and they agreed to refer him. This referral has now been cancelled by my other child's paediatrician because my baby is “thriving”. Yes he is gaining weight however he wants to feed constantly, has a poor latch on the bottle (we’ve tried lots of different ones), clicks his tongue whilst feeding and fails to finish a bottle often waking up screaming shortly after. He also swallows an awful lot of air during feeding and struggled to latch when I tried to breastfeed.
My other child struggled when weaning often choking and gagging due to their tongue tie which was eventually cut under a general anaesthetic. To this day my child's speech is still affected no thanks to their tongue tie which I feel was neglected.
In my experience bottlefed babies are treated differently to breastfed babies. I intend to make a complaint about the handling of this referral but having spent much of the day so far crying and feeling like I am a failure and that I have let my son down. I think I would have been better supported had I breastfed. I feel it’s unjust and unfair for referrals to be cancelled without even reviewing a baby or at the very least referring the child on to a more appropriate service. I await your response.
