I attended the BGH in mid December for planed surgery./as I live on my own a friend's husband drove me the 60 minute journey from home. Once the availability of an intensive care bed was confirmed and that the operation was scheduled to proceed, he returned home and I notified my sister who lives in Birmingham and she duly set off to Berwickshire. Some time after 1 p.m. theatre advised that I should get ready and I then waited in my hospital gown and stockings for about an hour. Then a nurse came from theatre to advise that the only remaining intensive care bed was required for an emergency and that my operation could not go ahead. Although I appreciate that someone else had a greater need, I was however very emotionally upset as I had been waiting in a tense state for some time. I must express my thanks for the support I was then given by Sheila and especially Carol in PSAU. My sister who was en route on the M6 then came to the BGH to take me home. My surgery has been rescheduled for 8th January and my daughter's fiance is to come up from Merseyside to bring me in to hospital and will remain there until it is confirmed that I am actually in theatre! I hope all goes as planned this time around.
