"Wait times in the Royal Infirmary"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My grandfather collapsed with heart problems in a local shop. He waited 2.5 hours for an ambulance which did not arrive. Thereafter the family took my grandfather to the hospital via taxi.

He waited in the accident emergency for 4 hours. He was told it can be a wait for up to 6 hours. We were also told if someone more sick arrives then my grandfather would just need to wait.

My grandfather is in his 90s and sat in the waiting room feeling like a burden. Thinking he should just go home. What if he left and something happened to him over night? All because he felt a burden to the NHS.

I'm very upset with the way he has been treated.

Dear MD14

I am sorry to read about your Grandfather’s experience and I hope that your Grandad is feeling better.

The Emergency Department can be extremely busy and as result waiting times can unfortunately be several hours. We understand that delays can be can be frustrating and upsetting for patients and their relatives. However, none of our patients should be made to feel like a burden.

I am sure the clinical team would be keen to hear more about your Grandad's experiences whilst he was in the Emergency Department. With your Grandad’s permission and if you feel comfortable can please contact me so that we can get some more details about your granddad. My email address is Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. Can you please quote the reference: 453771?

Kind Regards

Nicole

Dear MD14,

I am sorry to read that your grandfather waited so long for ambulance to arrive. It must have been very distressing for him and those with him.

If it would help you understand why there was a delay and if you wish to, please contact me by calling 0141 810 6101 and I will be able to talk about the pressures that there have been on the NHS in the last couple of weeks as this is what is likely to have caused a delay. If your grandfather is happy for me to do so I can talk through the call that was made for him, how it was prioritised and how it was managed after that, so that you will understand what was done for him.

Please assure your grandfather that he is not a burden and I do hope that he is recovering well.

Pat
