I originally visited the birth centre while pregnant and was very impressed by both the staff and the quality of the unit. It was very quiet when we visited (we were the only people there) so I decided to give birth there when the time came.
I was very nervous as this is my first child, and the midwives did all they could to assist with this.
I originally opted for a water birth, and the staff ran the pool as soon as we got there as I was in a lot of pain. The midwives were very understanding and made my partner a tea while I got changed for the pool. It was quiet and relaxing in the room with dimmed lighting, and I felt very much like the midwives were there to monitor and for help if needed but not to interfere.
After deciding the pool was not helping I was offered gas and air but this made me feel ill, again the midwives were great at this point as they did have some more suggestions for pain relief but when I asked for an epidural they quickly arranged for the transfer to Halifax and even came in the ambulance and reassured me on the way there.
"excellent"
