"No support or understanding of eating disorders..."

About: Littlebrook Hospital

I was admitted to Cherrywood in November 2017 for depression and an eating disorder. This admission just mad me worse, i stopped eating all together for 6 days and lost control of my anorexia yet all the team did were put me on liquid supplements and monitor my physicals. There was no care for eating disorders to be honest.

The support staff and some of the nurses were good but others were just frustrated that I coudln't eat and didn't understand about eating disorders. My physical health got dangerous but there was no intervention i was just left isolated with the torment of my eating disorder, the staff would place liquid supplements down and then leave when surely an eating disorder sufferer needs constant support because at that time I couldn't eat for myself.

The consultant was shocking and completely disregarded the issues and just spoke, not letting others or myself have an input into my care. I told them how it didn't help me and how I needed to go home or be transferred elsewhere. But they discharged me after 5 days which was only a week after a serious suicide attempt. Once again I was left feeling just as I did at the start and severely suffering with my eating disorder having only had 2 meals in 9 days and I only managed those meals because I was out with my mother who understood my condition and supported me through it.

My aftercare was horrendous, I was in-between CAMHS and adult services and they told me they had referred me to a dietician and an eating disorder team along with maybe diagnosing me with a personality disorder. They told me I would get a 7 day follow up and now it has almost been two months and that hasn't happened yet, is it ever? My dietician appointment and my eating disorder service is yet to happen and I haven't heard a word or who it will be with so cannot chase them up myself. Also having spoken to my CAMHS team which I had to be discharged from I haven't got a personality disorder and the unit only thought that because of my eating disorder which again shows how they don't understand eating disorders.

My treatment wasn't good and I am very sad to report that. I think with the caring support workers and some of the nurses it could be very good. But I think more training on eating disorders is required or for them not to take on eating disorder patients as they don't have adequate support for them such as ng feeding or dieticians and additionally understanding of the condition.

I am only still out of hospital because of my loving family who have held me up when I have been very weak and vulnerable which if I didnt' have I would probably be in another hospital or not even around. I personally don't find the support I received in Cherrywood adequate which I am very sorry to report.

Thank you for sharing your experiences although we are disappointed to note the challenges you experienced with some of our staff.

You have highlighted the need to improve awareness amongst our staff around caring for people with eating disorders since the loss of dedicated inpatient facilities for such clients.

We do offer awareness training to our staff but your comments highlight that this is not enough and since December the Matron has arranged with the dietician to provide monthly training sessions to wards to enhance all staff knowledge.

She also meets with the Dietician & Physical Health Nurses monthly to ensure that they are meeting clients' physical health needs.

It would be really helpful if you would be willing to discuss your experiences with the Littlebrook Hospital Matron, Cheryl Lee, to see what else we could learn to better support you and others with similar needs.

Cheryl can be contacted on 01322 622081.
